Our Introduction

Guangdong Medical Laboratory Animal Center (GDMLAC), founded in 1979, is an independent legal entity affiliated with the Department of Health of Guangdong Province in China. The center is the largest integrated platform for laboratory animal conservation, production, experiment and testing in Southern China. The Center provides high quality laboratory animals, animal models, and various services for biomedical research, teaching and industrial development, including animal feeding, breeding and bedding, animal experiments and experimental design.

Our 8,200-square-meter experimental facility can produce over one million laboratory animals annually in 19 strains, including rats, mice, guinea pigs and rabbits. In collaboration with Nanjing University, the Center has established the Southern Industrialization Base of National Resource Center in Mutant Mice, which provides a reliable supply of more than 30 kinds of common mutant mice and transgenic and knockout mouse model services. We currently provide products and services for more than 600 agencies in Guangdong, Beijing, Hong Kong, and 20 other provinces in China, including many leading biological medicine enterprises, universities, scientific research and medical institutions in China. Up to now, more than 7,000 research papers have been published of which the laboratory animals were provided by our Center.

The Center has been accredited the CNAS and CMA authentication for 180 projects in 14 main product categories. We are the first institute in Southern China that has obtained accreditation in laboratory animal, animal experiment and laboratory testing by the National or Local accreditation authorities. Serious platforms were established such as the Nude Mouse Experimental Platform, Testing Platform for Injection Safety, Human Disease Animal Model Platform, Drug Screening Platform, Pharmacology and Toxicology Experimental Platform, Big Animal Operating Room. Additionally, the Center provides CRO services such as SPF animal experiment facilities and supporting services to meet customer requirements. Till the end of 2012, the Center has performed drug, food, cosmetics, and chemical product screening and toxicology tests for more than 1000 items for more than 100 institutions such as Sanofi Pasteur, SGS Guangzhou branch, and Infinite. The Center has become an important platform for the development of biomedical and biotechnology in Guangdong as well as in Southern China.

In collaboration with The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Center established Guangdong-Hong Kong Joint Laboratory for Protein Research and Development. Animal Experiment Center of Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences was also founded in 2012. The Guangdong Medical Animal Experiment Public Service Platform was then launched with the purpose to provide one-step-whole service for medical research on laboratory animal-related consulting, design, testing, reporting, training, etc. which will largely accelerate the achievement of translational medical research.

The center has more than 70 employees, among them, 20 has masters or PhD degree. We also have 10 visiting professors whom we invited from several leading universities in China and other countries, such as the United States. The major areas of expertise include toxicology, veterinary, animal husbandry, experimental animals, animal nutrition, pharmacology, biology, genetics, hygiene laboratory testing, and others. We have researchers who were returned scientists after their postdoctoral training abroad, who are doctoral supervisor and are leading scientists and member of the China Toxicology Association. Our center researchers have received more than 20 grants supported by the National Natural Science Fund or Guangdong provincial funds, published over 200 research articles (20 SCI papers), 1 monograph and 3 National Standards. In collaboration with the Kumamoto University, New York State University at Buffalo, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Sun Yat-Sen University, Southern China Medical University and other well-known domestic and foreign scientific research and teaching organizations, we have established joint undergraduate, master, and doctoral student teaching and training programs.
